Lanvin
Lanvin, one of the oldest fashion houses in the world, was founded in 1889 by Jeanne Lanvin. Initially, Jeanne Lanvin began her career as a milliner, but her journey into the world of fashion was deeply influenced by her daughter, Marguerite. Jeanne's creations for her daughter attracted the attention of wealthy mothers, leading her to expand her offerings to include children's clothing, women's wear, and eventually, menswear.
The Paris-based house of Lanvin quickly rose to prominence in the early 20th century, distinguishing itself with its intricate craftsmanship, luxurious fabrics, and elegant designs. By the 1920s, Lanvin had established itself as a leading fashion name, renowned for its sophisticated couture, inventive use of color, and innovative designs. Jeanne Lanvin’s use of light floral prints and the iconic “Lanvin blue,” a unique shade inspired by the works of artist Fra Angelico, became signatures of the brand.
In addition to its clothing lines, Lanvin entered the world of fragrance with the launch of Arpège in 1927, a perfumed tribute to Jeanne Lanvin’s daughter, embodied rich, multi-layered scents that have achieved enduring popularity.
By the 1930s, Jeanne Lanvin expanded her empire to include a sportswear line, furs, and even a home decor line, highlighting her entrepreneurial spirit. Despite the challenges of World War II, Lanvin continued to prosper, solidifying its status within the fashion world.
Jeanne Lanvin passed away in 1946, and the company remained in family hands until 1989. Over the ensuing years, Lanvin has seen numerous creative directors at its helm, each bringing a new perspective while honoring its storied heritage. Alber Elbaz, who helmed the brand from 2001 to 2015, played a crucial role in revitalizing Lanvin, reintroducing it to the modern luxury market with a blend of sophistication and whimsy reflective of Jeanne Lanvin’s original vision.
