Goyard

Goyard, a French trunk and leather goods maker, has a rich history dating back to 1792, which makes it one of the oldest Parisian trunk makers still in prominent existence today. The journey began with the establishment of Maison Martin, a box-making, trunk-making, and packing company. It was François Goyard who eventually inherited the reins in 1853, following an apprenticeship under the company's founder, Pierre-François Martin, and succeeded Morel, Martin's successor.

François elevated the brand by moving it to 233 rue Saint-Honoré, Paris, where the Maison Goyard boutique still resides. It was there he introduced the emblematic Goyardine canvas, recognized for its lightweight, durable, and water-resistant properties, with its distinctive chevron pattern inspired by the traditional log-driving family trade.

A key figure in the company's lineage was Edmond Goyard, François's son, who took over in 1885. Under Edmond's leadership, Goyard expanded its bespoke services, catering to wealthy clients and royalty, and included custom trunks for usage on early automobiles, yachts, and railway carriages. Subsequently, Goyard's distinctive monogram canvases became a symbol of exclusivity and luxury.

Goyard remained a family operation until 1998, when Jean-Michel Signoles acquired the brand. A seasoned collector of luxury trunks, Signoles breathed new life and modernity into the brand while retaining its heritage of craftsmanship. He undertook the revitalization of classic models and expanded Goyard's presence globally, ensuring the brand's enduring legacy.
