Moynat

Moynat, a luxury French trunk and leather goods manufacturer, was founded in 1849 by Octavie and François Coulembier. It quickly rose to prominence in Paris, a city known for its fine craftsmanship and luxury goods. The house of Moynat became particularly renowned for its custom-made luggage and trunks, catering to a clientele that prized exclusivity and innovation.

The brand established its very first shop in the heart of Paris at 5 Avenue de l’Opéra. One of its most notable innovations was the introduction of the Limousine suitcase in 1902. This pioneering design featured a curved base that matched the contour of the car roofs of the time, making it a favorite among the wealthiest automobile owners.

Moynat is also lauded for creating one of the earliest waterproof trunks, a significant advancement in travel accessories. This evolution in design was crucial at a time when traveling by sea was a common mode of long-distance travel. The emblematic Moynat trunks quickly became celebrated for their robustness, lightness, and attention to detail.

Throughout its history, Moynat has collaborated with various innovators in the transportation sector. For example, in the early 20th century, the brand worked with renowned car manufacturers like Bugatti to design bespoke travel accessories that accentuated the luxury of automobile travel.

Despite facing competition from other luxury brands, Moynat distinguished itself through unparalleled craftsmanship and artistic collaborations. Over the years, some of the world's most influential figures, including royalty and celebrities, have sought out Moynat's creations.

In 2010, Bernard Arnault's LVMH group resurrected Moynat, opening a flagship store on Rue Saint-Honoré in Paris. This revival has allowed the heritage brand to reintroduce its classic designs to a contemporary audience while maintaining its reputation for exceptional quality and refined elegance. Under the guidance of Artistic Director Ramesh Nair and subsequently Nicholas Knightly, Moynat continues to honor its rich legacy by combining tradition with modernity.
