Colnaghi
Colnaghi, founded in 1760, is recognized as the world's first commercial art gallery. With a rich history spanning over two and a half centuries, the gallery has been a significant player in the art market, specializing in Old Masters, Ancient, and Modern works of art. Colnaghi has established galleries in London, New York, and Madrid, and participates in major international art fairs such as TEFAF Maastricht and Master Drawings New York.
The gallery's origins can be traced back to the partnership of Paul Colnaghi and Dominic Vivarés, who opened a print shop in London. By the late 19th century, Colnaghi had become a leading dealer in Old Master paintings, prints, and drawings, selling masterpieces to prominent collectors and museums during the Gilded Age. The gallery's reputation for connoisseurship and expertise has continued to the present day, with a commitment to offering clients exceptional artworks and advisory services.
Colnaghi's exhibitions and events showcase a diverse range of art and objects, from ancient works and Old Masters to 20th-century masterpieces. The gallery has organized major exhibitions in partnership with renowned museums, resulting in highly profitable sales. Colnaghi's leadership includes Executive Director Jorge Coll and Curator of Antiquities Carlos A. Picón, who bring their extensive knowledge and experience to the gallery's programming and client services.
The gallery's dedication to cross-category collecting and connoisseurship is reflected in its diverse exhibition program. Recent and upcoming exhibitions include "Idols & Icons," exploring the evolution of religious and popular devotion across four millennia; "Couples: a celebration of artistic synergy + collaboration," highlighting works by artistic couples; and "Picturing the Artist," a special display of portraits and self-portraits by artists from the 17th to the 20th centuries.
