White Cube
White Cube is a renowned contemporary art gallery, established in London in 1993 by Jay Jopling. It has grown to become one of the world's leading galleries, representing over 60 international artists and artist estates. White Cube's mission is built on the belief that art can enrich people's lives, and it has consistently presented exhibitions in galleries across three continents - in New York, London, Paris, Hong Kong, and Seoul.
In its early years, White Cube made a significant impact on the art world by presenting single-artist exhibitions in a small white room in London's Duke Street, St. James's. This intimate setting offered visitors a unique encounter with a single artwork or focused body of work, quickly establishing the gallery's reputation for innovative and thought-provoking shows. White Cube's wide-ranging programme in its first decade featured exhibitions by important artists such as Tracey Emin, Julie Mehretu, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and Luc Tuymans, as well as acclaimed masters of late 20th-century art, including Chuck Close, Lucian Freud, Ellsworth Kelly, and Richard Prince.
White Cube has been instrumental in nurturing emerging talent, including the generation of British artists who came to prominence in the early 1990s. It has consistently opened galleries in locations that align with the needs and ambitions of its artists and the artistic community. In 2000, it opened its second space in Hoxton Square in the East End of London, which was then the epicentre of London's artistic resurgence.
The gallery has a long publishing history, producing award-winning titles that combine innovative design and rigorous scholarship. White Cube's commitment to its artists is reflected in its support for their creative ambitions, earning it respect within the art community for its artist-led approach.
