Balenciaga, a name synonymous with avant-garde fashion, was founded by Spanish couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga in 1919 in San Sebastián, Spain. Originally an exclusive boutique, it soon gained a reputation for its sophisticated yet revolutionary designs. A move to Paris in 1937, prompted by the Spanish Civil War, marked a vital turning point. Cristóbal's inaugural Paris collection that year, which featured strikingly innovative pieces like the "Infanta" gown, established him as a critical force in haute couture.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Cristóbal Balenciaga's influence was unparalleled. His mastery of tailoring and avant-garde silhouettes led to the creation of iconic pieces such as the "sack dress" in 1957, which defied conventional ideas of shape and form, and the "babydoll" dress in 1958. Even his contemporaries, including Christian Dior, held him in the highest regard. Coco Chanel once remarked that he was “the only couturier in the truest sense of the word.”

Balenciaga’s designs were characterized by their structural precision. He was known for his bold use of fabrics, cuts, and innovative shapes, which forever altered the course of fashion design. His work was greatly influenced by Spanish culture, as evident in his use of lace, silk, and vivid colors.

In 1968, Cristóbal Balenciaga decided to retire, and after his death in 1972, the fashion house went through a period of dormancy. It wasn’t until the 1990s that the brand experienced a resurgence under the direction of various designers. However, it was under Nicolas Ghesquière, who took the helm in 1997, that Balenciaga truly returned to the forefront of fashion. Ghesquière revitalized the brand with his futuristic designs and innovative use of fabrics.

Today, led by Demna Gvasalia since 2015, Balenciaga continues to push the boundaries of fashion with its cutting-edge and controversial designs. The brand remains a fundamental influence, celebrated for its visionary approach to fashion that melds tradition with forward-thinking creativity.
