Mugler, originally founded as “Thierry Mugler,” is a prominent French fashion house established in 1973 by its eponymous creator, Thierry Mugler. Thierry Mugler, born in Strasbourg in 1948, originally trained as a dancer before turning his talents to fashion in the late 1960s. His unique perspective was evident from his debut collection, which fused futuristic elements with classical silhouettes. Mugler's work often emphasized strong, angular shoulders and a cinched waist, a thematic signature that became synonymous with the brand.

The brand's ascendancy in the 1980s was marked by its dramatic runway shows, which were more theatrical performances than traditional fashion presentations. In 1984, Mugler's 10th-anniversary show notably filled the Zenith Theatre in Paris with an audience of over 6,000, a record for a fashion show at that time.

Thierry Mugler stepped down from the brand in 2002, shifting his focus to photography and costume design. The brand continued to evolve under various creative directors, including Nicola Formichetti, who brought a modern, digital-savvy sensibility to the brand by collaborating with pop icon Lady Gaga.
