Missoni
Missoni, a prominent Italian fashion brand renowned for its vibrant knitwear and distinctive zigzag patterns, was founded by Ottavio ("Tai") and Rosita Missoni in 1953. The brand has its roots in the small town of Gallarate, near Milan, where the founders established their first small knitwear workshop. Ottavio, known for his skillful use of colors and patterns, combined his knack for design with Rosita's familial background in textiles, forming a powerful creative partnership.
Missoni's rise to fame began in 1967 during a Milan fashion show when models were controversially sent down the runway without bras. The lights exposed the sheerness of the clothing, causing a scandal that catapulted the brand into the global spotlight. By embracing daring and innovative design elements, Missoni quickly distinguished itself in the competitive fashion landscape of the 1960s and 1970s.
Throughout the 1970s, Missoni became synonymous with the “put-together” knitwear look, which resonated with the era's laid-back yet chic aesthetic. The brand was admired for its intricate patterns, a sophisticated interplay of color and various knitting techniques that aligned well with the haute couture fashion scene. The Missoni aesthetic became iconic and was often referred to as "to Missonize," a testament to the distinctive style and influence wielded by the brand.
In the ensuing decades, Missoni expanded its repertoire, launching menswear, women’s wear, and eventually home decor lines, maintaining its signature style across various collections. In 1997, control of the company passed to their children, with Angela Missoni serving as creative director, introducing modern influences while retaining the brand’s core identity.
