Backes & Strauss
Backes & Strauss, one of the oldest diamond companies in the world, holds a prestigious position in the annals of luxury watchmaking and high jewelry. Established in 1789 in Hanau, Germany by Georg Carl Backes, the firm initially carved out a niche for itself as a diamond merchant. During the early 19th century, the company expanded its operations to London, which emerged as the epicenter of the diamond trade and a global fashion capital.
It was during the mid-19th century that Johann Strauss, a visionary with a keen eye for luxury and craftsmanship, joined the company. This partnership marked a period of innovative advancements and a significant transformation. By 1873, Backes & Strauss gained prominence in the diamond industry and began to supply diamonds to some of Europe’s most illustrious jewelry houses. Their expertise and commitment to quality allowed them to build a stellar reputation among nobility and high society.
The early 20th century saw the company further embed itself into the fabric of London’s luxury industry. As their reputation flourished, Backes & Strauss became known not just for their flawless diamonds, but also for their extraordinary timepieces. They combined precision engineering with aesthetic brilliance, creating watches that were as reliable as they were beautiful.
In 2006, Backes & Strauss partnered with Swiss watchmaker Franck Muller to create exquisite timepieces that became synonymous with elegance and technical prowess. This collaboration merged centuries-old heritage with contemporary Swiss craftsmanship, culminating in collections that appeal to connoisseurs and collectors around the world.
