Christiaan Van der Klaauw
Christiaan Van der Klaauw is a revered name in the realm of horology, celebrated for crafting some of the world's most exquisite astronomical timepieces. Born in 1944 in Leiden, Netherlands, Van der Klaauw initially pursued studies in precision engineering at the Technical School in Leiden. His early fascination with and dedication to the mechanics of timekeeping prompted him to shift towards horology, leading him to intern with prominent Dutch clockmaker Uurwerkerij.
In 1974, Christiaan Van der Klaauw established his eponymous brand, setting up a small atelier in Joure, Friesland. His early creations included Foucault's Pendulum clocks and intricately designed Renaissance-style table clocks. However, it was his unique aptitude for incorporating astronomical complications that set him apart in the watchmaking world.
The brand reached significant milestones, particularly with the release of the "CVDK Planetarium" in 1999. This exceptional timepiece featured the smallest mechanical planetarium in the world, a creation that displays the orbits of Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn around the Sun. This awe-inspiring feat of horological engineering captivated enthusiasts and critics alike.
In 2009, Van der Klaauw received the prestigious honor of becoming a member of the "Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants" (AHCI), further solidifying his reputation as a master watchmaker. Throughout the years, the company continued to innovate, producing watches that meld scientific precision with artistic excellence.
2014 marked another landmark for the brand, as the Danish watchmaking duo, Pim Koeslag and Daniël Reintjes, took the creative reins. This strategic partnership infused fresh energy into the brand while revering Van der Klaauw's original vision. Under their guidance, the company developed remarkable new models such as the "Real Moon Joure," known for its highly accurate 3D moon phase display.
