Czapek & Cie
Czapek & Cie, a venerable name in the horological world, was founded in 1839 by François Czapek, a Polish immigrant watchmaker of Czech origin. Before founding his eponymous brand, Czapek had already made a significant mark in the watchmaking industry through a previous partnership with Antoine Norbert de Patek, which resulted in the creation of Patek, Czapek & Cie. This collaboration, however, dissolved in 1845, the same year Czapek established his own enterprise.
Czapek was not only a skilled watchmaker but also an innovative entrepreneur. He published a book on watchmaking, titled "Sposób Udzielanya Łatwy," which translates to "The Art of Watchmaking Simplified," providing insights into his in-depth knowledge of the craft.
The company quickly gained traction and acclaim, particularly within elite circles. Czapek & Cie became the official watchmaker to Emperor Napoleon III. This coveted appointment had far-reaching implications, securing the brand’s status and prestige across Europe. The company showcased its exceptional craftsmanship by participating in several World Exhibitions during the 19th century, notably in London in 1851 and Paris in 1855, further amplifying its repute.
One of the key innovations attributed to Czapek was the development of precision chronometers. The brand was known for utilizing the so-called "Czapek calibre," which featured a stem-winding system—a significant advancement over the winding key mechanism prevalent at the time. These technological advancements, coupled with exquisite design, set the company apart.
