Glashütte Original
Glashütte Original, a revered name in horology, originates from the small German town of Glashütte, nestled in the Ore Mountains near Dresden. The brand's history dates back to 1845 when Ferdinand Adolph Lange, encouraged by the Saxon government, initiated the establishment of a watchmaking industry in the region. Lange's visionary efforts paved the way for a flourishing community of skilled artisans who would collectively elevate the town to global prominence.
The founders of Glashütte's watchmaking industry, including figures like Julius Assmann and Adolf Schneider, laid the groundwork for a thriving craftsmanship tradition. Expertise in precision engineering and innovative design soon became synonymous with the area. By the late 19th century, Glashütte had gained a reputation for state-of-the-art pocket watches, and later for marine chronometers, which were indispensable for navigation.
World Wars and political upheavals significantly impacted this watchmaking hub. After World War II, the Soviet administration nationalized the industry, consolidating all watchmaking firms under the state-controlled entity, Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe (GUB). Despite such challenges, the craftsmanship spirit endured. Glashütte Original emerged from the privatization of GUB in 1994, embodying both tradition and progress.
The brand is renowned for its in-house manufacturing processes. Classic techniques are melded with modern innovations, ensuring the production of movements, dials, and cases. Noteworthy models include the Senator Chronometer and the PanoMaticLunar, which showcase the brand’s dedication to precision and artistry.
Glashütte Original's commitment to education manifests in the Alfred Helwig School of Watchmaking, named after the famed master watchmaker and inventor of the flying tourbillon. This institution trains future generations in the meticulous craft, preserving an unbroken lineage of expertise.
