Omega
Founded in 1848 by Louis Brandt in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, Omega SA has grown into one of the most revered names in the world of horology. Initially dubbed "Louis Brandt & Fil," the company quickly gained a reputation for precision and reliability, attributes that would become hallmarks of the brand.
In 1894, the company introduced the groundbreaking "Omega" 19-ligne caliber, a pioneering movement that marked a turning point for the firm. This innovation was so successful that it inspired the company to adopt the name Omega, underlining the significance of this achievement. By 1903, Omega had distinguished itself as a leader in the watchmaking industry due to its commitment to producing high-quality timepieces.
Omega's association with significant historical milestones began in earnest in 1917 when the Royal Flying Corps of Britain chose Omega watches for its combat units. The U.S. Army followed suit in 1918, cementing the brand’s reputation for accuracy under extreme conditions.
In the realm of sports, Omega made its mark by being appointed the official timekeeper for the Olympic Games for the first time in 1932 in Los Angeles, a role it has fulfilled ever since. This association with precision in timekeeping extended beyond sports when, in 1965, NASA selected the Omega Speedmaster Professional as the official watch for its astronauts. The Speedmaster consequently became the first watch worn on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969.
Omega’s devotion to innovation continued with the introduction of numerous ground-breaking models and technologies. The brand pioneered dive watches with the Seamaster line, which has seen various iterations since its introduction in 1948. Omega’s contributions to horology were further recognized in 1999 with the launch of the Co-Axial escapement, an advancement that significantly reduced friction within the movement, thereby extending the longevity and accuracy of the timepieces.
With an unyielding commitment to both aesthetic and technical excellence, Omega remains a dynamic leader in the watchmaking industry, blending its rich history with continuous innovation.
