Van Cleef & Arpels
Van Cleef & Arpels, a distinguished name in the world of haute jewelry, traces its origins to Paris in 1896, when Alfred Van Cleef, the son of a stone-cutter, married Estelle Arpels, the daughter of a precious stones dealer. This union of talent and heritage laid the foundation for an illustrious brand that would capture the imagination of jewelry connoisseurs for over a century.
In 1906, Alfred Van Cleef and his brother-in-law Charles Arpels opened their first boutique at 22 Place Vendôme, one of Paris's most prestigious locations. This establishment quickly became synonymous with innovation and luxurious craftsmanship. One of their early triumphs was the introduction of the "Mystery Setting" in 1933, a technique that allowed gemstones to be set with no visible prongs, creating an uninterrupted surface of shimmering beauty.
Van Cleef & Arpels gained global renown not just for their exquisite pieces, but also for their illustrious clientele. In 1956, they created the “Floral Tiara” for Princess Grace of Monaco as a wedding gift, solidifying their reputation for designing for royalty and the elite. Their creations have adorned notable figures such as Elizabeth Taylor, Eva Perón, and the Duchess of Windsor.
The brand also ventured into the realm of high jewelry watches, blending horology and gemology to craft items of exceptional beauty and precision. The "Cadenas" watch, designed in 1935, remains one of their iconic models, characterized by its innovative clasp and timeless elegance.
Van Cleef & Arpels has maintained a commitment to storytelling through jewelry, frequently drawing inspiration from nature, ballet, and fairy tales. Collections such as "Les Jardins" and "Poetic Complications" reflect this narrative approach, encapsulating emotions and stories through intricate design and masterful craftsmanship.
In addition to their boutiques in major cities worldwide, Van Cleef & Arpels’ pieces are often featured in exhibitions, further cementing their place in the annals of jewelry history. The School of Jewelry Arts (L'École des Arts Joailliers), established by the brand in 2012, offers classes and exhibitions to share the art and history of jewelry-making with the public, underscoring their dedication to the preservation and dissemination of their rich heritage.
