Tiffany & Co.
Tiffany & Co., often referred to simply as Tiffany's, is an American luxury jewelry and specialty retailer with an illustrious history dating back to its founding in 1837. Established by Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young in New York City, the company originally operated as a "stationery and fancy goods emporium." It was not until 1853, when Charles Tiffany took control, that the focus shifted exclusively to jewelry.
Tiffany's reputation for exquisite craftsmanship and innovative designs quickly earned it acclaim. One of the brand's most notable moments occurred in 1845, when it published the first-ever direct mail catalog in the United States, famously known as the "Blue Book." The distinctive blue hue of the catalog's cover would later become synonymous with the brand, referred to as "Tiffany Blue."
A significant milestone in Tiffany's history came in 1867 when it became the first American firm to win an award for excellence in silverware at the Paris World’s Fair. This achievement was followed by the introduction of the iconic six-prong Tiffany Setting engagement ring in 1886, designed to maximize the brilliance of a solitaire diamond.
Tiffany & Co. continued to make historical contributions in the following decades. In 1887, the company purchased the French Crown Jewels, further cementing its status as a purveyor of luxury and opulence. The early 20th century saw the introduction of the Tiffany Studios line, which included the celebrated stained-glass lamps by Louis Comfort Tiffany, the son of Charles Tiffany.
Throughout the 20th century and into the 21st, Tiffany's has maintained its place in the public eye by expanding globally and through notable appearances in popular culture, such as the 1961 film "Breakfast at Tiffany's." Tiffany & Co. continues to set the standard in luxury jewelry, with flagship stores and a legacy of elegance and innovation that remains unrivaled.
