Its origin lies in a marriage; Alfred Van Cleef had wed Estelle Arpels, and combining their talents, they established one of the most prestigious names in haute joaillerie. The first boutique opened its doors in 1906 at 22 Place Vendôme, Paris, a location that remains iconic to this day.

One of the brand's early innovations was the patented "Mystery Set" technique, introduced in the 1930s. This involved setting precious stones in such a way that no metal was visible, creating a seamless, radiant surface. This meticulously detailed craftsmanship elevated the brand’s reputation and showcased its commitment to excellence.

The company garnered significant acclaim by securing a number of illustrious clients from the early 20th century.
