Herzog & de Meuron
Herzog & de Meuron is a Swiss architecture firm established in 1978 by Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, both graduates of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich). Renowned for their innovative and diverse approach to materials and construction techniques, Herzog & de Meuron have left an indelible mark on contemporary architecture.
One of their earliest and most significant projects was the Ricola Storage Building in Laufen, Switzerland (1987), which showcased their ability to merge functionality with artistic expression. Another early work, the stone-clad Signal Box in Basel (1994), further highlighted their proclivity for material experimentation.
Herzog & de Meuron garnered international acclaim with the completion of the Tate Modern in London (2000). Transforming a former power station into a world-class art museum, they retained much of the original structure while adding distinctive modern elements, a hallmark of their work.
Their design for the National Stadium in Beijing, commonly known as the "Bird's Nest," captured global attention during the 2008 Olympic Games. The stadium's lattice-like steel structure exemplifies their innovative use of complex forms and materials.
The firm's portfolio extends to varied typologies, including the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg (2016), a concert hall acclaimed for its striking architecture and acoustic excellence. The VitraHaus in Weil am Rhein, Germany (2010), is another noteworthy project, illustrating their ability to combine simplicity and sophistication.
Herzog & de Meuron have also ventured into residential architecture, with projects like the multi-functional 56 Leonard Street in New York City (2017), a sculptural high-rise that stands as a distinctive addition to Manhattan's skyline.
Their contribution to academia and architecture extends beyond structures. Both Herzog and de Meuron have held esteemed professorships at institutions like Harvard University.
