A. Lange & Sohne
A. Lange & Söhne, founded in 1845 by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in the small town of Glashütte in Saxony, Germany, is a brand synonymous with horological excellence and innovative craftsmanship. Lange’s vision was to create exceptional timepieces that would rival those produced by Swiss watchmakers. His focus on precision and quality quickly earned the brand renown in the world of fine watchmaking.
Ferdinand Adolph Lange’s influence extended beyond his own workshop. He was instrumental in transforming Glashütte into a hub of watchmaking. By training a generation of skilled watchmakers, Lange fostered a local industry that would become central to Germany's reputation for quality timepieces.
Lange's descendants continued his legacy, particularly his sons Richard and Emil, who officially rebranded the company as A. Lange & Söhne. The duo maintained the brand’s commitment to precision and innovation. Despite the difficulties of World War I and the economic hardships that followed, the company persisted, unveiling groundbreaking developments such as the world’s first wristwatch with a chronograph and flyback function in 1936.
The brand faced a major setback at the end of World War II when the Soviet administration nationalized the company, leading to its closure in 1948. However, in 1990, Walter Lange, great-grandson of the founder, revived the brand with the support of Günter Blümlein, a visionary in the watch industry. This resurgence saw A. Lange & Söhne return to its roots, focusing once again on producing high-quality, mechanically intricate timepieces.
