Arnold & Son is a distinguished name in the world of horology, renowned for its intricate designs and innovations. The roots of this prestigious brand trace back to the 18th century and the remarkable figure of John Arnold, an esteemed watchmaker born in Cornwall, England, in 1736. Arnold's reputation in the watchmaking community was solidified by his groundbreaking innovations in marine chronometers, a crucial advancement for naval navigation.

John Arnold made significant contributions to horology, including the invention of the detent escapement mechanism, which greatly improved the precision of timekeeping. In 1764, the renowned watchmaker crafted a half-quarter repeater watch mounted in a ring – a marvel of miniaturization and craftsmanship during his era. Collaborations with other eminent figures, such as his friendship and professional relationship with Abraham-Louis Breguet, further advanced both their legacies.

The brand's association with the British Royal Navy amplified its prestige. In 1771, the Royal Navy commissioned Arnold for the construction of chronometers to enhance navigational accuracy at sea. His No. 36 chronometer, completed in 1774, established new standards for marine chronometry, and by the end of the 18th century, Arnold & Son had become the preferred supplier of chronometers to the Royal Navy.

In 1801, John Arnold’s son, John Roger Arnold, joined the firm, adding his expertise and continuing his father’s legacy. John Roger Arnold was instrumental in refining and evolving many of the mechanisms and designs introduced by his father. The pairing of his father's foundational work and his own innovations ensured the company remained at the forefront of watchmaking excellence.
