Patek Philippe
Patek Philippe, the venerable Swiss watch manufacturer, was established in 1839 by the Polish watchmaker Antoni Patek in Geneva, Switzerland. Initially founded as Patek, Czapek & Cie, the company underwent a significant transformation when French horologist Adrien Philippe joined the firm in 1845. Philippe, renowned for inventing the keyless winding mechanism, soon became a partner, and the business was rebranded as Patek, Philippe & Cie in 1851.
Patek Philippe has been at the forefront of horological innovation since its inception. In 1868, the company created the world's first wristwatch, crafted for the Countess of Koscowicz of Hungary. This marked a substantial shift in watchmaking, which had traditionally focused on pocket watches. The company continued to innovate throughout the years, introducing the first wristwatch with a perpetual calendar in 1925 and launching the Calatrava collection in 1932, which became emblematic of their dedication to timeless design and technical excellence.
In 1932, the Stern family acquired Patek Philippe, and under their stewardship, the company solidified its reputation for producing high-quality timepieces. Henri Stern played a pivotal role in expanding the brand’s reach and reinforcing its commitment to craftsmanship and precision. His successors continued this legacy, ensuring that each timepiece adhered to the highest standards.
Among the company’s notable achievements is the creation of the Henry Graves Supercomplication in 1933, a pocket watch commissioned by American banker Henry Graves Jr. This masterpiece featured 24 complications and remained the most complicated mechanical watch until Patek Philippe outdid themselves with the Calibre 89 in 1989, which boasted 33 complications.
Moreover, Patek Philippe is famous for its intricate and artistic enamel work, often adorned with cloisonné and miniature painting techniques, distinguishing their pieces as both functional instruments and works of art.
