Biondi Santi
Biondi Santi, an illustrious name in the world of wines, traces its roots back to 1885 when Ferruccio Biondi Santi became a pivotal figure in the creation and promotion of Brunello di Montalcino. Ferruccio, originally a pharmacist, inherited the Greppo estate in the heart of Montalcino, Tuscany. His revolutionary approach and meticulous vinification techniques established the brand as synonymous with exceptional quality.
The Biondi Santi family's journey in viticulture began earlier in the 19th century with Clemente Santi, who conducted pioneering work in isolating and promoting Sangiovese Grosso, the grape destined to define Brunello di Montalcino. It was through Clemente's insight and dedication that Ferruccio was inspired to pursue winemaking with a precise focus on this varietal. By the late 19th century, Ferruccio's Brunello gained considerable recognition, particularly after the 1893 vintage, which potent critics hailed for its complexity and aging potential.
Tancredi Biondi Santi, Ferruccio's grandson, further elevated the family's formidable reputation. During the mid-20th century, Tancredi's stringent protocols in both vineyard and cellar solidified Brunello's status on the global stage. He was instrumental in establishing Brunello di Montalcino as Italy's first DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) wine in 1980, a testament to the wine's authenticity and superior quality.
Under Franco Biondi Santi’s stewardship, the estate continued to safeguard its legacy through adherence to traditional methods and emphasis on longevity. Franco’s conservation of vintage archives and refines production ensured that each bottle of Biondi Santi carried historical significance as much as it did exquisite flavor.
A unique highlight of the Biondi Santi legacy includes the consistent release of its Riserva, with select vintages considered legendary. Esteemed for their unparalleled structure and longevity, these wines become coveted assets in prestigious cellars worldwide. The commitment to excellence initiated by original founder Ferruccio remains unwavering, making Biondi Santi a celebrated name that continues to shape the landscape of fine Italian wines.
