Château Angélus

Wine | Château Angélus, Wine Producer, Saint-Émilion, Gironde, Bordeaux, France

Château Angélus, located in the heart of the Saint-Émilion appellation, represents one of the premier wine estates in Bordeaux, France. Its history stretches back to 1782 when the de Boüard de Laforest family first established roots in the region. Previously known as Château L’Angélus, the estate has consistently maintained familial ownership, a distinguishing characteristic that has contributed to its continuity and evolution over centuries.

The name “Angélus” is derived from the daily Angelus bell tolls that are heard from three local churches: Mazerat, Saint-Martin de Mazerat, and Saint-Émilion. It is said that vineyard workers would pause their labors to offer prayers at these moments, intertwining religious traditions with the rhythms of viticulture.

In 1954, Château Angélus earned its initial classification as a Grand Cru Classé, marking the beginning of its ascent within the esteemed ranks of Bordeaux wines. This recognition was solidified through the diligent efforts of Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, who took over the management during the 1980s. By introducing innovative viticultural techniques and modernizing the wine-making process, Hubert elevated the quality and reputation of the estate’s wines.

A landmark in its history occurred in 2012, when Château Angélus reached the esteemed rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé A, a distinction shared by only a handful of châteaux. This accolade signified the culmination of decades of consistent quality and meticulous care in the vineyards and cellars.

The château itself, with its hallmark 19th-century bell tower, serves as an architectural symbol of its heritage. The vineyards, spanning approximately 23.4 hectares, are planted predominantly with Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes, yielding wines that are known for their richness, complexity, and aging potential.

Château Angélus continues to be renowned for its deep commitment to excellence and tradition, producing wines that embody the essence of the Saint-Émilion terroir and the centuries-old expertise of the de Boüard de Laforest family.
