Domaine Coche-Dury
Domaine Coche-Dury, a renowned winery based in Meursault, Burgundy, has been crafting exceptional wines for decades, primarily known for their highly sought-after Chardonnay. The estate's story began in 1973 when Jean-François Coche, then fourteen years old, started working alongside his father, Georges, in the family vineyards, marking the third generation of Coches to tend these vines. Jean-François's marriage to Odile Dury in 1975 expanded the family holdings, leading to the formation of Domaine Coche-Dury.
Jean-François's work style is reminiscent of the farmer-monks who once nurtured Burgundy during the Middle Ages, focusing on meticulous winemaking and constant vigilance in the vineyards. Today, his son, Raphaël, and his wife, Charline, continue the family legacy, managing nearly nine hectares of vineyards spread across six communes: Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Auxey-Duresses, Monthelie, Volnay, and Pommard. The estate's vineyards are farmed using lutte raisonnée, a sustainable farming method.
Domaine Coche-Dury is known for its exquisite Chardonnay, but they also produce six exceptional Pinot Noirs, with no clones planted in their vineyards—an absolute rarity in Burgundy. Their winemaking philosophy emphasizes long, traditional vinifications with extended lees contact, which prevents oxidation and enhances the wines' freshness. Larger-than-usual doses of new wood are used to extend the cellar-aging potential of these pedigreed wines, providing a clean slate for perfect fruit.
Coche-Dury's wines are celebrated for their vibrant acidity, often hidden in the opulence, which contributes to their successful aging. The domaine's annual production of approximately 4,200 cases is highly sought after, with staggering prices in the marketplace due to the wines' exceptional quality and limited availability.
