Originally, the vineyard land was owned by the Abbey of Saint-Vivant, who cultivated its slopes with dedication and precision.

The name Romanée-Conti reflects a significant historical episode: in 1760, the vineyard was acquired by the Prince de Conti for an extraordinary sum. This transaction underscored its then-emerging reputation for producing particularly exceptional wines. The prince cherished the vineyard so greatly that he forbade the sale of its wines, reserving them exclusively for his personal enjoyment and to bestow as privileged gifts.

Over centuries, the vineyard changed hands several times, surviving the tribulations of the French Revolution and various upheavals.
