Opus One Winery
Opus One Winery represents a confluence of vision and expertise in the winemaking world. Established in 1978, the winery is the result of a unique partnership between Robert Mondavi, an influential figure in the American wine industry, and Baron Philippe de Rothschild, of the esteemed Château Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux, France. This collaboration marked a significant moment in the history of viticulture, bridging the Old World and New World wine traditions.
The winery's creation was announced at a New York City press conference in 1980, symbolizing the birth of what would become one of the most esteemed wines produced in the Napa Valley. The inaugural vintage from 1979 and 1980 was released in 1984, debuting at an unprecedented price of $50 a bottle, the highest launch price for a California wine at that time.
Opus One's vineyards are located in the Oakville AVA, a distinguished wine-growing region in Napa Valley. The estate spans over 169 acres and is planted predominantly with Bordeaux varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. The architectural design of the winery, completed in 1991, was crafted by Scott Johnson and is noted for its blend of classical and modern elements, making it a striking landmark in Napa Valley.
Throughout its history, Opus One has maintained a commitment to excellence. The winery employs meticulous vineyard practices and innovative winemaking techniques, often borrowing from both Mondavi’s and Rothschild’s respective traditions. This dedication to quality has consistently earned Opus One high accolades and recognition in the wine industry, bolstering its reputation internationally.
Opus One Winery continues to produce exceptional vintages, each bottle reflecting the harmony and legacy of its founders' vision. As a leading figure in the winemaking community, it remains a symbol of innovation and collaboration, celebrating over four decades of excellence in viticulture.
