Screaming Eagle
Screaming Eagle Winery and Vineyards, located in Napa Valley, California, has solidified its place among the world's most revered wine producers. Founded in 1986 by real estate agent Jean Phillips, the vineyard's origins are both modest and intriguing. Phillips initially planted a variety of grape types, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. However, it was her decision to seek advice from renowned winemaker Heidi Barrett in the early 1990s that truly marked the beginning of Screaming Eagle's ascent.
The debut vintage in 1992 received an extraordinary score of 99 points from wine critic Robert Parker, setting a precedent for the winery's future reputation. The acclaim was instant; Screaming Eagle became a sensation in the wine community, known for the limited production that enhances its exclusivity. Each year, the winery produces only about 500–800 cases, focusing on quality and carefully managed vineyards.
In 2006, billionaire Stan Kroenke purchased the estate, ensuring that it remained independently operated. Kroenke brought in David Abreu, a noted viticulturist, and winemaker Andy Erickson to uphold the winery's storied craftsmanship. Under their guidance, the estate has continued to receive rave reviews and high scores for subsequent vintages.
The wine itself is lauded for its complex flavor profile, often characterized by deep blackcurrant, blackberry, and subtle notes of oak, cocoa, and exotic spices. Screaming Eagle's cult status is often reflected in its market price, with bottles fetching thousands of dollars. The 1992 debut vintage once sold for an astonishing $500,000 at a charity auction.
In addition to its flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, the winery introduced a second label, “Second Flight,” in 2006, allowing more wine enthusiasts to experience its esteemed craftsmanship. Despite its small vineyard size of just 57 acres, the impact of Screaming Eagle on the wine world is undeniable, making it one of the most highly sought-after wines internationally.
