Royal Huisman
Founded in 1884 by Jan Huisman, Royal Huisman is a renowned Dutch shipyard specializing in the construction of custom sailing and motor yachts. Located in Vollenhove, the company's long history is marked by innovation, exceptional craftsmanship, and a commitment to quality.
Initially focusing on wooden fishing boats, the yard quickly expanded its repertoire. By the early 20th century, it had ventured into building yachts. A significant milestone was reached in 1924 when the company constructed its first sailing yacht. The mid-20th century saw further expansion under the leadership of Jan Huisman’s grandsons, Wolter and Jan.
The 1950s and 1960s marked the transition from wood to aluminum, a move that positioned Royal Huisman at the forefront of yacht building technology. In 1954, the company launched its first aluminum yacht, marking the beginning of its specialization in this lightweight and durable material.
The yard gained international acclaim in the late 20th century, particularly with the launch of the 30-meter ketch, "Flyer," in 1976. Designed by Sparkman & Stephens, Flyer won the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1977-1978, setting a new standard for ocean racing yachts and significantly boosting the company’s global reputation.
In 1984, the centennial year, Royal Huisman received the "Royal" designation from Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, a prestigious acknowledgment of its excellence and contributions to the maritime industry. Another groundbreaking project was the 90-meter sailing yacht "Athena," launched in 2004. At the time, Athena was the largest private sailing yacht in the world, showcasing Royal Huisman's capability in building megayachts.
Throughout its history, Royal Huisman has maintained a focus on innovation. The shipyard has consistently embraced new technologies, such as advanced composites and hybrid propulsion systems, ensuring that its yachts remain at the cutting edge of performance and sustainability.
