The Istanbul Biennial, a prominent contemporary art exhibition, has been held biennially in Istanbul, Turkey, since 1987. Organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV), the biennial serves as a platform for dialogue between artists from diverse cultures and the audience, favoring an exhibition model that encourages interaction with the artists' work over a national representation model.
Considered one of the most prestigious art events alongside Venice, São Paulo, and Sydney, the Istanbul Biennial has played a significant role in promoting contemporary artists from Turkey and other countries on the international stage. The event has fostered an international cultural network between local and international art circles, artists, curators, and art critics, bringing together new trends in contemporary art every two years.
The Istanbul Biennial has been known for its unique approach to exhibition venues. After the second biennial, historical buildings were incorporated conceptually, creating a distinctive aspect of the event. This practice has resulted in the inclusion of contemporary art in traditional spaces, adding another layer of depth to the biennial experience.
The curator, appointed by an international advisory board, develops a conceptual framework for each edition, inviting a variety of artists and projects that align with the theme. The biennial has been curated by notable figures such as René Block, Rosa Martínez, Paolo Colombo, Yuko Hasegawa, Dan Cameron, Charles Esche, Vasıf Kortun, Hou Hanru, What, How & for Whom / WHW, Adriano Pedrosa, Jens Hoffmann, Fulya Erdemci, Carolyn-Christov Bakargiev, Elmgreen & Dragset, and Nicolas Bourriaud, showcasing a wide range of artistic perspectives and curatorial visions.
In addition to the exhibition, the Istanbul Biennial offers a comprehensive public programme, including panel discussions, conferences, and workshops, providing opportunities for students and art enthusiasts to engage with the art world and follow developments and discussions in contemporary art.
The Istanbul Biennial has left a permanent work in the city with each edition, contributing to the cultural landscape of Istanbul and creating a lasting impact on its audience.
