La Tomatina
La Tomatina is a renowned festival held in the Spanish town of Buñol, located in the Valencian Community, approximately 30 kilometers from the Mediterranean coast. This unique event, which has been a tradition since the mid-20th century, takes place on the last Wednesday of August, during the town's week-long festivities honoring its patron saint, San Luis Beltrán.
The origins of La Tomatina can be traced back to the 1940s or 1950s, during which a group of young people initiated a tomato-throwing event during a local parade. Over the years, this spontaneous act evolved into a significant tradition, drawing the attention of thousands of participants and spectators from around the world.
The festival officially begins with the "palo jabón," a greased pole climbing contest, followed by the main event - the chaotic tomato battle in the town square. Trucks loaded with ripe tomatoes are brought into the town center, and participants engage in an hour-long tomato fight, creating a spectacle of joy, community, and tradition.
Despite its humble beginnings, La Tomatina has grown into an internationally recognized event, attracting thousands of visitors each year.
