Fuji Rock Festival
The Fuji Rock Festival, held annually in Naeba Ski Resort, Niigata Prefecture, Japan, is a three-day event that showcases over 200 Japanese and international musicians. Established in 1997, the festival was originally named due to its inaugural location at the base of Mount Fuji, but has since been held in Naeba Ski Resort since 1999. This change in location has not altered the festival's name, which remains a testament to its origins.
The festival features seven main stages, including the Green Stage with a capacity for almost 50,000 spectators, and stages such as the White Stage, Red Marquee, Orange Court, and Field of Heaven. The festival site, which includes the hub called Oasis, offers more than 30 food stalls from around the world and remains open until late at night, along with the Red Marquee where an all-night rave continues until 5am.
Despite its initial challenges, including a disastrous first year due to a typhoon, the festival has grown and evolved, becoming the largest outdoor music event in Japan. The festival's aim is to be "The cleanest festival in the world," with great effort put into recycling.
The festival's lineup boasts a diverse range of genres, from rock and pop to punk and rap, attracting over 100,000 attendees each year.
In addition to the festival, Naeba Ski Resort offers a variety of accommodation options, including hotels, ryokan, and minshuku, although competition for these is fierce and they tend to book out very quickly. Many festival goers find accommodation in nearby ski resorts such as Tashiro, Asagai, and Mitsumata.
