Isle of Wight Festival
The Isle of Wight Festival, established in 1968, is a renowned British music festival held annually in Newport, Isle of Wight, England. Initially a counterculture event, it gained prominence as Europe's equivalent to Woodstock. The 1970 festival was particularly noteworthy, drawing over 600,000 attendees, making it one of the largest human gatherings in the world at the time. The lineup featured iconic artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, The Doors, The Who, Lighthouse, Ten Years After, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Joni Mitchell, The Moody Blues, Melanie, Donovan, Gilberto Gil, Free, Chicago, Richie Havens, John Sebastian, Leonard Cohen, Jethro Tull, Taste (Irish band), and Tiny Tim.
Following a hiatus from 1970 to 2002, the festival was revived by music promoter John Giddings, who continues to curate the event. Since its revival, the festival has hosted legendary acts like The Rolling Stones, The Who, Muse, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Kasabian, Kings of Leon, The Strokes, Coldplay, The Sex Pistols, Fleetwood Mac, The Police, Blondie, and Red Hot Chilli Peppers, as well as standout solo performances by David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Jay-Z, and Amy Winehouse.
