Fuji Shibazakura Festival
The Fuji Shibazakura Festival is an annual spring event held in the Fuji Five Lakes region of Japan, showcasing vast fields of shibazakura, or moss phlox, in full bloom. With the best times to visit being from mid-April to early May, the festival takes place at the Fuji Motosuko Resort, offering visitors an iconic view of Mount Fuji against a vibrant carpet of pink, white, and purple flowers. Covering approximately 2.4 hectares, the display features over 500,000 shibazakura plants of multiple varieties, creating intricate patterns and color gradients.
The festival originates from Japan’s long-standing appreciation of seasonal flowers, mirroring traditions such as cherry blossom and wisteria viewing. The moss phlox, native to North America, was introduced to Japan in the early 20th century and has since become a key feature of ornamental gardens. At the festival, pathways wind through the carefully maintained fields, allowing visitors close-up views of the floral arrangements.
In addition to the floral display, the festival hosts a range of cultural and culinary experiences. The Fujisan Umaimono Festival, held on-site, features local specialties such as yuba (tofu skin), houtou noodles, and seasonal sweets. The event also includes souvenir shops, scenic observation decks, and photography spots highlighting the interplay between the flowers and Mount Fuji, making it a significant seasonal highlight in Japan’s Yamanashi Prefecture.
