International Opera Awards

The International Opera Awards, established in 2012, is an annual celebration of outstanding achievement in opera worldwide. This prestigious event, founded by Harry Hyman, a passionate opera enthusiast and philanthropist, aims to raise the profile of opera as an art form, recognize exceptional talent, and generate funds for The Opera Awards Foundation. The Foundation supports aspiring artists in financial need, providing bursaries to singers, conductors, accompanists, directors, and ensembles, regardless of their country of origin.

The International Opera Awards jury comprises industry professionals and artists led by Opera editor John Allison, ensuring a rigorous selection process. Nominations are open to the public, followed by long lists considered by the jury, who announce shortlists ahead of the ceremony. The Awards have garnered support from distinguished patrons, including Sir Thomas Allen, Dame Janet Baker, Placido Domingo, Dame Anne Evans, Dame Felicity Lott, and Sir John Tomlinson.

The Awards have a rich history of recognizing exceptional talent, with past winners such as Conductor Sir Antonio Pappano and American mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne, who received a lifetime achievement award. The event has also highlighted innovative productions, such as Dutch National Opera's world premiere of Alexander Raskatov's Animal Farm.
