Göteborgs Kulturkalas

Göteborgs Kulturkalas, also known as the Gothenburg Culture Festival, is an annual cultural event held in Gothenburg, Sweden. Established in 2007, the festival has grown to become one of the largest cultural festivals in the Nordic region, attracting up to 1.7 million visitors. The festival is produced by Göteborg & Co, a part of the City of Gothenburg, and is funded in partnership with Kulturkalaset's partners.

Göteborgs Kulturkalas offers a wide range of cultural experiences, free of charge, to the public. The festival's program includes opera, art, music, improv theater, handicrafts, theater, literature, film, sports, and more, aiming to inspire visitors to discover new cultural experiences and continue exploring the city's cultural offerings throughout the year.

The festival is committed to sustainability, having been an environmentally certified event for several years, controlled by the City of Gothenburg's environmental administration according to the Swedish Environmental Base Standard. Additionally, the festival meets the criteria for Fairtrade City Gothenburg, demonstrating its dedication to ethical practices.

In terms of accessibility, Göteborgs Kulturkalas has implemented various measures to ensure that everyone can enjoy the festival. These measures include the 'Verbalisera mera' project, which encourages artists to become their own audio describers and incorporate verbalization into their stage language, and a Touch Tour in collaboration with Gothenburg Opera, allowing visually impaired individuals to explore the sets, instruments, and stage environment at the Opera.

The festival's vision is to create positive change and be relevant to everyone, with sustainability objectives encompassing ecological, social, and economic dimensions. Examples of sustainable practices include transforming Bältespännarparken into a disposable-free festival site, offering free rental bikes during the festival, and implementing the Circular Event Clothing project in collaboration with Science Park Borås.

Göteborgs Kulturkalas is not only a celebration of culture but also a platform for promoting sustainability, accessibility, and ethical practices, making it a significant event in Gothenburg's cultural landscape.
