Songkran

Songkran in Bangkok is an annual festival marking the traditional Thai New Year, typically observed from April 13 to 15. Rooted in Buddhist traditions, it originally involved the gentle pouring of water over Buddha statues and elders as a symbolic act of purification and respect. Over time, the festival has evolved into a large-scale celebration recognized for its exuberant water fights and street festivities.

The event is most prominently celebrated in areas such as Khao San Road, Silom Road, and Ratchaprasong, where both locals and international visitors partake in citywide water battles. Participants arm themselves with buckets, water guns, and hoses, engaging in friendly splashing as a gesture of goodwill. The communal atmosphere is further enhanced by traditional performances, temple visits, and merit-making activities, reinforcing the festival’s spiritual roots.

Beyond the water festivities, Songkran is also a time for family reunions, as many Thais travel to their hometowns to honor elders and visit temples. Wat Pho and Wat Arun are popular sites where devotees conduct ritualistic water pouring over Buddha images while monks offer blessings. Government offices and public buildings close for the holiday, and streets often feature parades showcasing traditional Thai attire and cultural performances.
