Targa Florio
The Targa Florio is a legendary motor race with a rich history, rooted in Sicily. Established in 1906 by Vincenzo Florio, a wealthy pioneer race driver and automobile enthusiast, the Targa Florio quickly gained international fame. The race was initially conceived as a whole tour of the island of Sicily, but over the years, it was limited to the 72 km (45 mi) Circuito Piccolo delle Madonie, which was lapped multiple times.
The Targa Florio took place on public roads, navigating through the challenging terrain of the Madonie mountains before descending towards the sea. This unique circuit, with its narrow roads and enthusiastic crowds, became notorious for its difficulties and dangers. Despite these challenges, the race attracted some of the most renowned drivers and manufacturers in the world, including Enzo Ferrari, Tazio Nuvolari, Stirling Moss, and Porsche, who hold the record for the most wins with 11 victories.
The Targa Florio was part of the World Sportscar Championship between 1955 and 1973, gaining a reputation as one of the most prestigious and challenging endurance races in the world. However, due to growing safety concerns, the race was discontinued as a speed race in 1977, marking the end of an era in motor racing history.
Today, the spirit of the Targa Florio lives on through the Targa Florio Rally, a rallying event that is part of the Italian Rally Championship. The Targa Florio Museum in Collesano also serves as a reminder of the race's vivid history and the impact it had on the world of motor sports.
