Mille Miglia
The Mille Miglia is a renowned automotive race that originated in 1927, founded by the young Counts Francesco Mazzotti and Aymo Maggi. This open-road endurance race took place in Italy, spanning 24 editions from 1927 to 1957, with the first race occurring on March 26-27, 1927. The race covered approximately 1,000 miles, starting and ending in Brescia, passing through iconic Italian cities such as Rome, Siena, Modena, and Parma.
The Mille Miglia gained significant popularity, attracting hundreds of entrants and becoming part of the World Sportscar Championship in 1953, which included other iconic endurance races like the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The race was known for its speed and danger, with an estimated 5 million spectators lining the route, leading to the unfortunate death of 56 people, including 24 drivers/co-drivers and 32 spectators, over its 30-year history.
In 1977, the Mille Miglia was revived as the Mille Miglia Storica, a parade for pre-1957 cars, which also led to the creation of the 2007 documentary film 'Mille Miglia – The Spirit of a Legend'. The modern Mille Miglia Storica is a regularity race for classic and vintage cars, with participation limited to cars produced no later than 1957 that had attended or were registered for the original race.
Mille Miglia brings together exceptional personalities from the world of sports, showcasing the rich history and culture of Italy. Today, the Mille Miglia remains a significant and timeless event, captivating the hearts of automotive enthusiasts and spectators alike.
