Breeders' Cup
The Breeders' Cup World Championships, established in 1984, is an annual series of Grade I Thoroughbred horse races operated by Breeders' Cup Limited. This prestigious event, which initially ran as a single-day event through 2006, expanded to two days in 2007, with the exception of 1996 when it was held at Woodbine Racetrack in Canada. The Breeders' Cup rotates between four primary tracks: Santa Anita Park, Churchill Downs, Belmont Park, and Keeneland, with Del Mar Thoroughbred Club joining the rotation in 2017.
The Breeders' Cup features 14 races, with purses totaling over $30 million, making it one of the most lucrative horse racing events worldwide. Each race presents four Breeders' Cup trophies to the connections of the winner and a garland of flowers draped over the withers of the winning horse. Many Breeders' Cup winners have gone on to win the Eclipse Award in their respective division.
The Breeders' Cup has been held at Santa Anita Park more than any other track, with its 11th event taking place in 2023. Churchill Downs has hosted nine Breeders' Cups, with the most recent in 2018. Belmont Park has hosted the series four times, and Gulfstream Park, Hollywood Park, and Keeneland each hosted the meet three times.
The Breeders' Cup is a significant event in the horse racing world, attracting top horses, jockeys, trainers, and owners from around the globe. The two-day event offers a year-end culmination of excitement, glamour, and prestige, with world-renowned chefs, celebrity sightings, and thrilling races that capture the attention of spectators and industry professionals alike.
