Burghley Horse Trials

The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials is an esteemed annual three-day event held at Burghley House near Stamford, Lincolnshire, England, in early September. It is recognized as one of the six premier three-day events in the world, hosting competition at the CCI5*-L (five-star) level, and is part of the Grand Slam of Eventing.

Established in 1961, the Burghley Horse Trials emerged when the 6th Marquess of Exeter, an Olympic gold medalist in athletics and IOC member, learned that a three-day event at Harewood House could no longer be held due to suspected foot and mouth disease. Since then, Burghley has hosted ten championships, including the first World Championship in 1966, and is the longest continuous running international event, with seven course designers over the years.

The event features three disciplines: Dressage, Cross Country, and Jumping. Dressage tests the basic training of the horse, improving its posture and increasing obedience and calmness. Cross Country, the most popular and demanding discipline, spans over four miles with 30 fences, allowing visitors to get close to the action. Jumping, held on the final day, tests the horse and rider's precision and agility.

The Burghley Young Event Horse final, held in conjunction with the event since 1990, evaluates four- and five-year-old horses on their potential as future Olympic mounts.
