Open de France
The Open de France is a prestigious European Tour golf tournament, inaugurated in 1906, making it the oldest national open in Continental Europe. It has been a part of the European Tour's schedule since its inception in 1972, and is held annually at Le Golf National near Paris, with the exception of 1999 and 2001. This tournament has a rich history, having been hosted by various venues since its inception.
The Open de France has been a significant event in the world of golf, with an impressive list of winners that includes some of the sport's greatest players, such as Peter Oosterhuis, Brian Barnes, Severiano Ballesteros, Greg Norman, Sandy Lyle, Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer, Robert Allenby, Retief Goosen, Sam Torrance, Colin Montgomerie, and José Maria Olazábal. The tournament has also seen historical moments, such as the double victory of Jean-François Remésy in 2004 and 2005, and the surprise win of Pablo Larrazábal in 2008, who came through from the qualifying rounds.
In addition to its rich history, the Open de France is known for its challenging course, which is both tough and demanding, with hilly terrain, water obstacles, and bunkers. The tournament is played in four rounds of 18 holes, and attracts some of the best golfers from Europe and around the world, making it one of the most important stages of the European Tour.
The Open de France is also part of the European Tour's structure, which is divided into three stages. At the top of the structure is the European Tour, which brings together the best golfers in Europe and around the world. Below the European Tour is the Challenge Tour, which is the antechamber of the elite, and at the base of the pyramid are four tours called "satellites," which are intended as a way for young professionals to test their mettle.
The Open de France's status as the oldest national open in continental Europe, its illustrious list of winners, its exceptional courses, and its matching prize of three million euros makes it one of the biggest events of the year.
