Round Barbados Sailing Week
Barbados Sailing Week is an annual regatta held in Barbados, organized by the Barbados Cruising Club in association with Barbados Tourism and Mount Gay Rum. This event has a rich history dating back to the 19th century when it was based on the competition for bragging rights for the fastest "Trading Schooner." In this era, the prize for captains was worth its weight in gold, as the prices for cargo arriving ahead of rival ships commanded a massive premium.
The regatta features various races, including the headlining 60nm Mount Gay Round Barbados Race, which offers crews a chance to win their skipper's weight in rum if any of the 20 records are broken. This race is particularly noteworthy, as it allows participants to circumnavigate the entire island of Barbados, showcasing the stunning coastline and crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean Sea.
In addition to the Mount Gay Round Barbados Race, the regatta includes a three-day Coastal Series, which offers spectacular racing along the island's white-beach coastline. The series provides participants with the opportunity to enjoy the island's natural beauty while competing in high-level sailing races. The event concludes with the Ocean Passage Race from Barbados to Antigua, offering a challenging and exciting end to the regatta.
