Davis Cup Final
The Davis Cup is the preeminent international team event in men's tennis, run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and contested annually among teams from over 150 competing countries. First held in 1900 as a challenge between Great Britain and the United States, the Davis Cup has grown to become the world's largest annual team sporting competition, with over 130 nations participating.
The Davis Cup is structured as a knock-out tournament, with the winners referred to as the World Champion team. The competition is unique in that it provides a team environment in an otherwise individual sport, with tennis legends such as Rod Laver, Björn Borg, John McEnroe, and Rafael Nadal having graced the competition over the years.
The competition was initially limited to amateurs and national registered professional players until 1973, five years after the start of the Open Era. The most successful countries in the competition's history are the United States and Australia, with 32 and 28 titles respectively.
The Davis Cup's current format, introduced in 2019, features 18 nations competing in one venue to be crowned world champions. The competition is spread over four weekends during the year, with each elimination round between competing nations held in one of the countries and played as the best of five matches.
The World Group, which includes the world's best 18 national teams, competes annually for the Davis Cup, while nations which are not in the World Group compete in one of three regional zones. The competition's regional zones are divided into four groups, with Groups I and II playing elimination rounds and Groups III and IV playing a round-robin event with promotion and relegation.
