Breguet Classic Tourbillon 3358
The Classique Tourbillon 3358 unites 350 diamonds, a mother-of-pearl dial, and Breguet’s iconic tourbillon in one masterpiece. ShareThe newest debut from Bregue — the Classique Tourbillon 3358 — is a breathtaking demonstration of precision and beauty. At its core lies the tourbillon, a remarkable innovation patented by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1801, designed to counteract gravity’s impact on timekeeping. This signature mechanism takes center stage in a composition of diamonds, mother-of-pearl, and gold, each detail meticulously crafted to enhance its elegance.
Positioned at the base of the dial, the tourbillon gracefully marks the passage of time. Framed by a polished gold ring and set against a sparkling field of snow-set diamonds, it completes a rotation every minute, ensuring precision regardless of the watch’s orientation. The surrounding gemstones, arranged in seamless rows of varying sizes, transform the dial into a radiant display, while the rhythmic motion of the tourbillon adds an almost poetic dimension to the piece.
Abraham-Louis Breguet, often called the father of modern watchmaking, brought scientific rigor and artistry to his craft. After studying under prominent horologists and physicists in France, he established a workshop on Île de la Cité in Paris, where his groundbreaking inventions, including the tourbillon, were developed. The tourbillon regulator remains one of his most celebrated achievements. By mounting the escapement components on a rotating carriage, Breguet neutralized the effects of gravity on pocket watches, significantly improving their accuracy. This mechanism, named after the celestial term “tourbillon,” was patented in 1801 and continues to serve as a benchmark in fine watchmaking.
The Classique Tourbillon 3358 is powered by Breguet’s manually wound calibre 187D. This in-house movement, assembled with 187 components and 21 jewels, operates at 18,000 vibrations per hour and offers a 50-hour power reserve. The tourbillon regulator, housed within this calibre, exemplifies precision engineering. Its structure ensures consistent accuracy, while its visibility on the dial provides a captivating glimpse into its operation.
Breguet’s artisans in the Vallée de Joux, Switzerland, have also paid meticulous attention to the movement’s finishing. The main plate, visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, features a stippled decoration reminiscent of a lunar surface, achieved using a diamond burr. This hand-applied detail ensures that every piece is uniquely textured, adding a personal touch to the mechanical artistry.
The watch’s dial is a masterclass in gem-setting. Using the intricate “snow” technique, artisans place diamonds of six different sizes in a seemingly random yet tightly packed arrangement, creating a shimmering surface that conceals the underlying metal. These diamonds radiate outward, forming arcs along the flange that echo the elliptical opening at 6 o’clock, where the tourbillon is showcased.
Complementing this brilliance is a ring of natural white mother-of-pearl, positioned off-center at 12 o’clock. This iridescent element houses the black Breguet numerals, while two blued steel hands sweep gracefully over it, ensuring legibility without detracting from the design. The interplay between the diamonds’ sparkle and the soft glow of mother-of-pearl creates a visual harmony that elevates the dial’s artistry.
The 35mm case, crafted from 18K white gold, is equally opulent. Its slender profile, measuring just 9.3mm thick, is adorned with diamonds on the bezel and lugs, while the fluted caseband features a crown topped with a rose-cut diamond. These details are carefully balanced to enhance the watch’s elegance without overwhelming its design. Completing the ensemble is a sky-blue alligator leather strap, secured by a triple-blade folding clasp crafted from gold and set with diamonds.
