The Marine Tourbillon Equation Marchante 5887, initially introduced in 2017, marked an unexpected and impressive addition to Breguet’s Marine collection, blending technical mastery with a distinct aesthetic. First available in a platinum case with a blue dial, this intricate timepiece signaled a major redesign of the Marine collection a year later. To commemorate the 220th anniversary of the tourbillon in 2020, Breguet expanded the collection by introducing a pink gold version with a slate and brown dial. This year, the watch returns in an eye-catching version featuring a platinum case paired with a black dial.

Serving as the technical pinnacle of Breguet’s Marine line, the Marine Tourbillon Equation Marchante 5887 embodies the sophistication of high complications, including an equation of time, a perpetual calendar, and a tourbillon, all within the ultra-thin Calibre 581DPE. The collection’s design pays homage to Abraham-Louis Breguet’s heritage as “Watchmaker to the French Royal Navy,” a title granted by Louis XVIII in 1815, highlighting Breguet’s marine chronometers that played a vital role in naval navigation.

The 43.9mm platinum case houses the movement and incorporates Breguet’s signature elements, such as the fluted caseband and a wave-shaped crown guard. Despite its impressive array of complications, the watch maintains a manageable 11.9mm thickness, showcasing the efficient design of its ultra-thin movement. Protected by sapphire crystals on both sides, the case is water-resistant to 100m and displays a cold, elegant platinum tone.

The dial retains the collection’s signature wave-inspired guilloché pattern but introduces a striking black base accented with silver details. The brushed chapter ring, tourbillon bridge, and white gold frames around the perpetual calendar indications provide contrast, while the blackened gold Roman numerals align with the black-silver theme. The hands, marked with Super-LumiNova for enhanced visibility, include a minute hand for solar time featuring a gold-plated, polished ring tip as the sole touch of colour.

The Marine 5887’s display centers around four main hands. The classic Breguet-style hands indicate calendar hours and minutes. The perpetual calendar is represented by a central retrograde date hand on an arched scale, alongside day and month windows positioned between 10 and 11 o’clock and 1 and 2 o’clock, respectively. The one-minute tourbillon at 7 o’clock, visible under a bridge and sapphire cover, features a titanium cage and operates at 4Hz. The power reserve indicator is subtly located between 7 and 8:30.

The standout complication, the running equation of time, simultaneously shows the discrepancy between mean solar time and true solar time, which can vary by up to 14 minutes late or 16 minutes early throughout the year. The mechanism includes an equation of time cam linked to a feeler that drives the equation lever, visible through the sapphire crystal above the tourbillon. The fourth hand, dedicated to solar time, completes the display.

On the reverse, the in-house Calibre 581DPE is showcased with an intricately engraved platinum peripheral rotor featuring a wave motif. The movement bridges are engraved with the outline of the Royal Louis, an 18th-century Royal Navy warship, and the barrel displays a hand-engraved compass rose. The movement boasts an 80-hour power reserve and combines traditional craftsmanship with modern elements such as a silicon Breguet balance-spring and escapement wheel within the titanium tourbillon cage.

Paired with a black rubber strap secured by a triple folding platinum clasp, this edition of the Marine Tourbillon Equation Marchante 5887 joins the permanent collection.
