Two decades ago, Michel Parmigiani, a revered restorer of antique timepieces and a master watchmaker, embarked on a new journey with encouragement from the Sandoz family. This journey gave birth to Parmigiani Fleurier, an independent manufacture renowned for its exquisite creations. With over thirty in-house movements and unique automaton-equipped table clocks, the brand cemented its place among the finest in watchmaking.

In 2021, under the leadership of CEO Guido Terreni, the brand underwent a transformation, streamlining its collection to focus on the Tonda and Toric families. Yet, the heart of Parmigiani Fleurier remains deeply tied to the intricate art of the minute repeater, a passion of its founder. Celebrating the maestro’s upcoming birthday, the brand has unveiled the Armoriale Mysterious Repeater, an extraordinary secret watch that pays homage to Parmigiani’s devotion to classical watchmaking.

The Armoriale Mysterious Repeater is a part of Parmigiani Fleurier’s Exceptional Pieces collection. This timepiece revives the historical allure of minute repeaters, a mechanism that delivers the time acoustically rather than visually. Unlike modern repeaters with dials displaying time, this watch relies on its chimes to announce the hours and minutes. This nod to history recalls an era before electric light, when the gentle sounds of a repeater would guide users through the hours of darkness. For those who prefer a visual reference, the reverse of the watch features a time display. A jade chapter ring from Guatemala, dotted with spherical markers, frames rose gold hands indicating hours (“H”) and minutes (“M”).

The watch is encased in 18k white gold, measuring 12.65mm in thickness, and draws inspiration from classical motifs. The wide fluting on the case middle reflects the timeless beauty of Doric columns, while the geometric patterns on the cover and caseback echo the Fibonacci sequence, a mathematical phenomenon often linked to the Golden Ratio. This reference to nature’s perfection can be seen in the spirals of snail shells, pinecones, and sunflower heads. Every detail, from the angular lugs to the polished finish, showcases meticulous craftsmanship. The minute repeater slider on the left flank and the crown—adorned with Grand Feu enamel—enhance the watch’s elegant aesthetic.

The highlight of the Armoriale Mysterious Repeater lies beneath a sage green Grand Feu enamel cover. Vanessa Lecci’s artistry shines through in the enamel work, complemented by delicate hand-guilloché patterns crafted by Yann Von Kaenel and intricate engravings by Eddy Jacquet. The combination of these artisanal techniques creates a cover that is as much a work of art as the watch itself.

At the core of this watch are the cathedral gongs, which deliver a rich, resonant chime. These extra-long gongs wrap almost twice around the movement, amplifying the tonal depth of the chimes. Precision-engineered hammers strike the gongs with unparalleled accuracy, producing distinct notes for hours, quarters, and minutes. This remarkable acoustics system is powered by a manual-winding movement developed by Renaud Papi, offering a 72-hour power reserve. The movement’s innovative flywheel mechanism ensures a noiseless operation, transferring power seamlessly to the chiming complication.

The back and sides of the case are hollowed out, further enhancing the sound projection. This design is reminiscent of the Toric Quaestor Labyrinthe, another masterpiece in Parmigiani Fleurier’s repertoire. Every aspect of the movement is designed to prioritize acoustic excellence while maintaining the mechanical precision for which the brand is renowned. Adding to its exclusivity, only five pieces of the Armorial Mysterious Repeater will be produced. Each watch can be personalized, making every piece unique to its owner. The watch is presented in a special resonator box crafted from Risoud spruce wood, a material chosen for its superior acoustic properties.
