Richard Mille RM 16-02 Automatic Extraflat
The Richard Mille RM 16-02 Automatic Extraflat features titanium or Terracotta Quartz TPT and the CRMA9 automatic movement. ShareRichard Mille continues to refine its position in the world of ultra-thin mechanical watches with the reveal of the brand new RM 16-02 Automatic Extraflat. Known for pushing boundaries in design, engineering, and materials, the brand has introduced new variations of its rectangular thin automatic watches. These models, available in grade 5 titanium and terracotta-coloured quartz TPT, represent an evolution of the brand’s earlier Extraflat collection, incorporating technical updates and fresh design choices while reimagining their appeal.
From an engineering perspective, the RM 16-02 introduces updates to an existing case profile and movement architecture. The calibre CRMA9 is touted as a “new” movement due to its redesigned components, even though its performance aligns with other Richard Mille calibres. The movement emphasizes aesthetics, with angular bridges, a printed sapphire crystal dial, and intricate finishing designed to create a modern visual impact. The angular automatic rotor, weighted with platinum, complements this theme, contributing to the watch’s distinctive character.
This focus on angularity extends across the design, from the cut-off hour markers to the squiggly squared line on the dial. While the composition might not appeal to purists seeking traditional horological elegance, it underscores Richard Mille’s commitment to innovation.
The RM 16-02’s case design is both practical and bold, with a slightly reduced size compared to earlier models. Measuring 36mm wide, 9.5mm thick, and 45.6mm lug-to-lug, the new dimensions aim for improved comfort on the wrist. Water-resistant to 30 meters, the case materials highlight Richard Mille’s ongoing experimentation. The titanium version offers a classic, high-performance option, while the terracotta-coloured quartz TPT provides a fresh, earthy alternative. This layered composite material, long associated with the brand, continues to showcase the possibilities of advanced material science in luxury watchmaking.
Both models come with matching-color rubber straps, designed for comfort and visual cohesion. The titanium version presents a sleeker, more traditional aesthetic, while the quartz TPT version introduces a bold, reddish-brown hue, adding a distinctive flair to the lineup.
The calibre CRMA9 automatic movement offers a straightforward time-only display with hours and minutes. Operating at 4Hz and providing a 50-hour power reserve, the movement is engineered for reliability and visual appeal. The bridges, crafted from coloured titanium, require meticulous machining and hand-finishing, reflecting the brand’s dedication to craftsmanship.
The angular automatic rotor is a standout feature, diverging from the traditional half-circle design found in most automatic movements. Its platinum weighting ensures efficient winding while contributing to the overall visual theme of angularity and innovation. Viewed through the sapphire case back, the movement underscores the watch’s dual focus on performance and aesthetics.
The RM 16-02 Automatic Extraflat is priced at CHF 120,000 for the titanium version and CHF 140,000 for the terracotta quartz TPT version, whilst Richard Mille’s decision to market the RM 16-02 with gender-neutral appeal adds an interesting dimension to its positioning.
