15 Hudson Yards, Diller Scofidio + Renfro
15 Hudson Yards is an 88-story luxury residential high-rise in Manhattan's Hudson Yards, featuring state-of-the-art amenities and stunning views of the New York skyline. ShareThe tower at 15 Hudson Yards is an eighty-eight-story residential high-rise that includes a mix of rental apartments and condominiums, with a third of the units designated as affordable housing. It anchors the southeast corner of Hudson Yards, a twenty-eight-acre mixed-use development situated between Chelsea and Hell’s Kitchen. The tower’s form transitions smoothly from the rectangular Manhattan grid at its base to a contoured cloverleaf at its apex, with the quadrants oriented to maximize panoramic skyline views in all directions.
Each floor has a slightly different footprint, and the building’s insulated glass enclosure is shaped using precision cold-forming techniques to achieve curvature without sacrificing thermal efficiency. The tower is part of the Hudson Yards microgrid, a local infrastructural network with two cogeneration plants that produce electricity for the neighbourhood. Each building’s central plant is connected in a thermal loop, enabling the exchange of heat and chilled water, achieving more than double the efficiency of conventional systems.
15 Hudson Yards and the Shed, which adjoins it to the east, share 450 feet of frontage along the High Line. Although designed for three different clients—the City of New York for the High Line, a private developer for the residential tower, and a new nonprofit for the Shed—the three structures form a unified urban ensemble. During the design phase of the tower, a deal was struck to cede its base to the Shed, allowing the nonprofit cultural organization to use the expanded footprint for its operations, offices, and mechanical areas. In exchange, the developer received special dispensation from the city to build the tower taller, trading seven lower floors for seven higher, more valuable ones.
