In 2028, Singapore’s skyline will gain a prominent addition with the opening of 8 Shenton Way, a 63-story mixed-use development designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). This towering structure will combine public spaces, offices, retail establishments, a hotel, and luxury residences, becoming Singapore’s tallest building at 305 meters. Strategically located at the intersection of the Central Business District, Marina Bay, Tanjong Pagar, and the Greater Southern Waterfront, it will be a focal point in Singapore’s urban landscape.

The design of 8 Shenton Way draws its inspiration from bamboo forests. SOM’s partner Mustafa Abadan explained that they aimed to create a unified architectural expression, embracing Singapore’s lush environment. Bamboo groves, known for their vertical growth and resilience, provided a fitting metaphor for the building’s towering form. The structure integrates these elements into its design, using vertical elements that mimic bamboo stalks to evoke strength and natural harmony.

The stepped design of the skyscraper begins with a plant-filled base that seamlessly integrates with street-level landscaping. As the building rises, terraces and voids punctuate the façade, reinforcing the bamboo-inspired aesthetic. These features also serve functional purposes, such as enhancing ventilation and providing natural light.

Inside, the lobby will include a multi-story atrium adorned with terracotta, wood, and stone, along with a reflecting pool to create a serene entrance. On the exterior, materials like champagne-colored terracotta and bamboo accents will give the building a warm, natural appearance. The use of curved edges and bay windows throughout the design will offer expansive views of the city and sea.

Public amenities will further enhance the tower’s appeal. A performance space at the street level, surrounded by retail and seating areas, will draw visitors and activate the area. The second floor will host an open-air green space with restaurants, set in a biodiverse landscape designed to attract birds and butterflies.

Conceived during the pandemic, the design prioritizes the physical and mental well-being of its occupants and visitors. Advanced air filtration systems, anti-microbial finishes, and contactless technologies will enhance safety and hygiene. Additionally, open-air green spaces throughout the building will provide areas for relaxation, helping to reduce stress and improve air quality.

Sustainability has been woven into every aspect of 8 Shenton Way. Targeting the prestigious Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Green Mark Platinum certification, the project is committed to achieving at least 30% energy and water savings, as well as demonstrating exemplary green building practices. Materials like terracotta, which is durable and manufactured in a zero-waste process, and engineered bamboo, a renewable resource, will feature prominently in the construction.

The building incorporates several measures to minimize operational carbon. Energy-efficient glazing will reduce solar heat gain while allowing natural light to flood indoor spaces. Landscaped gardens, spread throughout the structure, will improve ventilation and reduce cooling needs. Additionally, seven terraces filled with greenery will encourage natural airflow and create tranquil outdoor spaces.

To promote sustainable transportation, the development will offer facilities for bicycles and electric vehicles. It will also connect directly to Singapore’s underground pedestrian network and nearby MRT stations, making it easily accessible for commuters. The mixed-use nature of 8 Shenton Way will create a vibrant urban community, active around the clock. Its location at the crossroads of key districts positions it as a gateway between Singapore’s financial hub, historic neighborhoods, and future developments like the Greater Southern Waterfront.
