Mandarin Oriental Residences Abu Dhabi, Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG)

Mandarin Oriental will debut its first branded residences in Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island, featuring 228 luxury homes designed by BIG and set to open in 2028. Share

Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group is bringing its first branded residences to Abu Dhabi, partnering with Aldar for the development on Saadiyat Island. Set within the cultural district near the Zayed National Museum, the project will comprise 226 luxury residences, embodying Mandarin Oriental’s signature design and renowned service. The residences will overlook major landmarks, including Jean Nouvel’s Louvre Abu Dhabi and the upcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi by Frank Gehry, blending luxury living with unparalleled views of some of the world’s most impressive cultural icons.

Danish architecture studio BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) is spearheading the design of these new residences, placing the homes within two distinct blocks that feature stepped terraces for each unit. The design strategically maximizes the breathtaking views of the Zayed National Museum and other cultural landmarks while maintaining a unique, modern aesthetic that complements the island’s architectural landscape. This collaboration reinforces the dynamic growth of Saadiyat Island as a cultural and residential hub.

BIG’s design approach features clean lines, large glass panels, and terraces that step gracefully down each building, ensuring residents have private outdoor spaces that make the most of the region’s stunning views. The buildings’ forms echo the dynamic surroundings and are designed to harmonize with the sculptural wings of the nearby Zayed National Museum, currently under construction by Foster + Partners. As an established leader in contemporary architecture, BIG is known for blending functionality with bold aesthetics, exemplified by past projects such as the Museum for Paper Art extension in Denmark and the adaptive reuse of a 1950s power plant in the United States.

The interiors, designed by New York-based designer Lillian Wu, will combine earthy materials such as warm woods and marble with decorative chandeliers to create an inviting and elegant atmosphere. Floor-to-ceiling windows will enhance the sense of openness, bringing abundant natural light into the expansive living spaces. Each residence will have open-plan layouts that connect living areas directly to kitchens, while bedroom suites will come with private terraces and luxurious bathrooms. Residents will have access to a range of upscale amenities, including a spa, gym, beauty bar, library, theatre, and games room. These facilities are designed to align with Mandarin Oriental’s commitment to service excellence and offer an experience akin to high-end hospitality within the comfort of home.

The partnership is also a testament to Aldar’s ability to attract globally renowned luxury brands that emanate service excellence, delight customers through every interaction, and elevate the overall living experience.”

The Mandarin Oriental Residences aim to blend seamlessly into Saadiyat Island’s vibrant atmosphere, which is known for its pristine beaches, fine dining options, and cultural attractions. The island’s strategic position offers residents a unique lifestyle that includes relaxation and high-energy activities.

The development’s completion is anticipated in 2028, with unit sales already underway.
