The Bellemont, Robert A.M. Stern Architects

The Bellemont on the Upper East Side combines 19th-century European architecture with modern luxury, featuring 11 exclusive condominiums and sophisticated amenities, all designed by Achille Salvagni. Share

The Bellemont marks the intersection of Madison Avenue and 86th Street with its 13-story structure that houses 11 condominium units and nearly 4,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space. Designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects (RAMSA), The Bellemont’s architecture draws inspiration from the grand mansions of late 19th and early 20th-century New York, found along Madison Avenue and Fifth Avenue, blending traditional French architectural elements with American boldness.

The building’s facade features strong rustication, curved corners, and a sculptural quality reminiscent of traditional French palazzos with simpler stone patterning above the robust base. Classical elements such as voussoirs around the arch of the main door and arched windows accentuate the piano nobile and the frieze floor on the seventh level. Above this, the building is topped with multiple penthouses set back from the main structure, crowned with an iconic assembly of cornices, brackets, circular openings, and additional voussoirs that enhance its historic French aesthetic.

The lobby is designed to reflect the ambience of French orangeries and Central Park, with walls featuring subtle bas-relief depictions of trees and custom terrazzo flooring. A cast-bronze reception desk and a stone fireplace face a grand orb-shaped chandelier of onyx and bronze, setting a tone of sophisticated welcome that is maintained throughout the building.

Inside, The Bellemont offers luxurious living spaces designed to reflect the upscale New York lifestyle, combining clear entry foyers, spacious galleries, and defined living areas with modern conveniences like contemporary kitchens and bathrooms, large closets, and high ceilings of 16 feet which allow for ample natural light and views over Central Park and Madison Avenue. The development, managed by Naftali Group, has already seen significant milestones with the commencement of closings, highlighted by the record-breaking sale of the $67.8 million Penthouse C. This sale set a new high for price per square foot in this part of the Upper East Side, with Penthouses C and D combining to form a four-floor, 13,000-square-foot duplex that serves as the building’s crowning residence.

Achille Salvagni, an internationally acclaimed interior designer known for his work on super-luxury yachts and high-end private residential projects, was tasked with designing the interiors of The Bellemont. This project marks Salvagni’s first foray into full-building residential design, including both private residences and shared amenity spaces. The residences themselves boast grand proportions, high ceilings, and expansive views through monumental windows, with select units featuring private entry foyers, custom-designed limestone fireplaces, and ample private outdoor spaces.

The project also includes a detailed homage to Parisian style, with interiors that echo the grand old homes of both New York City and Paris. Salvagni has applied a palette of soft butter and ivory contrasted with ebony to evoke the feeling of a grand Parisian apartment, using curved edges, high baseboards, and light wood finishes that enhance the natural light. The overall aesthetic is complemented by aged parquet de Versailles flooring and dark stained millwork, which together provide an elegant backdrop to the matte ivory shell of the spaces.

Residents of The Bellemont are treated to a host of luxurious amenities aimed at wellness, leisure, and entertainment. These include a state-of-the-art fitness centre, a private cinema with a wet bar, an inspired children’s playroom, a regulation squash court, and a rooftop lounge offering panoramic views of Central Park. The lobby, a standout feature, showcases bespoke terrazzo floors with white marble leaf inlays, a beautifully integrated ceiling with custom lighting, and a grand chandelier, all attended around the clock by a doorman and concierge.

Located in a coveted enclave of the Upper East Side, The Bellemont is surrounded by picturesque streets and beautiful townhouse blocks, with Central Park, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Guggenheim, and The Frick Collection nearby, as well as premier shopping destinations on Madison and Fifth Avenue.
